OKLAHOMA CITY – Oklahoma Insurance Commissioner John D. Doak is on a mission to protect Oklahomans from fraud. At an event Wednesday night in Tulsa, he discussed insurance scams targeting seniors. The AARP OK event, “An Evening with Frank Abagnale,” drew a sold out crowd to the Gilcrease Museum.
“Every Oklahoman needs the tools to protect themselves from fraud,” said Doak. “The crimes may grow more sophisticated but, with the right tools and training, we can still stay one step ahead of the criminals.”
The event, held by the AARP OK Fraud Watch Network, featured tips from Frank Abagnale. The fraud expert, depicted in the film “Catch Me If You Can,” is an authority on forgery, embezzlement and secure documents. More than 14,000 financial institutions, corporations and law enforcement agencies use his fraud prevention programs. He is also a former spokesperson for the National Association of Insurance Commissioners.
“I was extremely impressed with the information presented by Mr. Abagnale,” said Doak. “Education is the greatest tool we have for fighting crime, so I appreciate his efforts to teach Oklahomans about fraud.”
Consumers who think they may be a victim of insurance fraud are encouraged to call the Oklahoma Insurance Department’s Consumer Assistance hotline at 1-800-522-0071.
